The formation of the rainbow

After our acquaintance with Iris, the goddess of the Rainbow, it is time to get to know the natural phenomenon itself and have a look at its function.

Rainbow is an atmospheric phenomenon observed to occur often after a rainfall.

It is a large, bright, colorful arch that crosses the blue of the sky. In addition to this celestial phenomenon, several times we detect the appearance of smaller rainbows at points where there are many fine droplets of water, such as automatic sprinkler systems, fountains, or bursts of waves while a ship is crossing the sea.

This colored arc is formed when light rays are refracted and reflected by drops of the falling rain.

As sunlight travels almost parallel to the ground, it penetrates every drop and diffuses into the colors of the spectrum.

Refracted rays penetrate the inside of the drop until they hit the opposite side of it, where they are reflected and refracted again as they appear. Rainbow is the entire visible spectrum reflected by millions of drops.

Although each drop reflects all colors, an observer will see the spectrum only from the drops that are at the right angle to reflect the light waves diffused by them. Even then, the observer will only see one color from each falling drop.

Nick Chalas: Fantastic nature’s wonders how the sunlight is divided into its constituent colored bands by the refracting water droplets. Well done Pano, to translate and describe this visually amazing effect in the atmosphere! Interesting also, how medical/ biologica/ technical terms like ‘Iris’ derive their name from.
