Translation into English

Semantic of colors (E)

Peculiarities

We did close the previous post mentioning on the color concepts alluding the confusion caused between green and blue with the words:

“If green is the last formed concept of color terms, blue is confused with it as are confused the blue – green shades of the sea.”

A survey on Central American tribes, who speak local native dialects which have evolved up to the 4th stage of color concepts, at least proved that there are no words to distinguish green from blue.

The same applies to Japanese, where in the Japanese language the word "aoi" is used for blue and green as well. "Aoi" is the color of sky, "aoi" is the color of trees. In the Japanese language, there is a peculiarity in the evolutionary sequence, where the concept of blue is formatted before that one of green. Green started to differ from blue in the 20th century, when the recently formed words midori- iro and gourin (derived from the English “green”) serve to distinguish green from blue color. But even today if you go to Japan you hear the green lights of traffic referred as "aoi".

Greek is another language showing a relative peculiarity.

The developmental disorder is on the sixth stage and the appearance of the color term for brown. In ancient Greek language the meaning of brown was formed too early, just after the concept of red, before the semantic for the meaning of yellow and green. The word “faio” was used to refer to both, gray and (mostly smooth “beige”) brown, which were mixtures of non-colors that actually reflect the impure color gradations between light – dark.

The strange thing in Greek is that the ancient words “faios” and “poliis” featured in this sense, were lost (stopped being in use) to emerged much later, with outlandish names on the regular semantic World Series, giving the right to researchers to argue if the brown was not as concept in ancient Greek or Greek Cypriot contemporary language, as well as in Welsh, the language of Tamil, of Eskimos and Melanesians, while people of Lapland and the Thais are using the expression red – black to convey the meaning of brown.

This exception was a surprise to researchers. A surprise that may shock the Greeks i.e. that two ancient color terms fled away, to be re-discovered after long time using new, foreign (gray and coffee color) words instead of using the ancient Greek ones to imply these color meanings.

The color concepts from blue and then, are so new to the otherwise ancient Greek language, that such outlandish words (not following yet the Greek grammar rules) are used to determine the concepts of these new color groups.

(I.e.: blue, brown, gray, orange, purple, pink)

The last four color terms are still a little baffled with each other, so the meaning of orange is confused with yellow and red colors. Red shades of purple and dark pink complexions are confused with red and warm gray hues with browns.
