Θεωρούμε τον χρωματικό κόσμο που μας περιβάλλει δεδομένο και δεν αναρωτιόμαστε γιατί άραγε υπάρχουν τα χρώματα;

Color Conversations (6a) The two questions

"What is color?"

"Why colors exist?"

Two questions that make us look differently in the world of colors.
Two questions that make us realize this color feast that surrounds us and ask ourselves:

"What is color?", "Why there are colors?"

With our first entrance to the real world, coming out of the cave that wrapped us safely for nine months, we open our eyes and we bathe in light and a world of colors, consisting of thousands of shades (estimated at around 9 000 000 hues perceived by man), which we perceive slowly as our visual system is perfected and stabilized.

We consider as granted the color world that surrounds us and we do not wonder why there are colors?

At some point, on young age, many people are wondering about the nature of colors and feel aware of the subject by learning about their relationship with light, their physical structure, their use. We think then that our question has been answered and just when the question stands up in front of us, demanding a more general answer, then we realize how far we are from a more complete declaration of this enigma.

Just then we do understand how unknown is for us the world of colors, and that man’s relationship with them is about the same as the relationship of an infant to literature or algebra.

Nick Chalas: How would you define a basic colour. There is an infinite range of red for example. Let alone all the other colours.

Panos Karayiannis: Nick thank you for your comment that is quite serious and basic as well. How would we define a color as a basic one? The reply is very simple and very complicated at the same time. We define as basic any color that cannot be produced by a mixture of other colors. Yes there is an infinity range of reds, blues, yellows and other colors, but when we talk in general for red we include all red shades etc. Linguistic, the most sophisticated languages, now days, use up to 11 color terms only (no more) and each term is general for all the shades comprised by the referring color. This we’ll be cleared up enough on following posts.
